A Word… On Similar Inspiration

Have you seen those commercials about the Mac using the PC operating systems? I have. I don’t like them. In these commercials we see the Digital Diablo holding hands with an upstanding PC. On top of this blasphemy, the Malicious Mac informs the audience that he is still superior to PC. LIES!!! That has never before been true nor is it true now. I prayed to the comic gods that one of my favorite satirists would draw a comic on this travesty against all righteous and good PC users. The comic gods responded in a way that reminds me, they have a sense of humor.

A web comic was made, but it was not from one of my favorite satirists at all. It was the usually lacking, but well meaning, creator of Ctrl Alt Del who first coined the comic. (Seen Here)

I thought this particular strip was funny, opinionated, and expressed exactly how I felt. Thus the strip satisfied my primal needs that only good comics can fill. Kudos Mr. Buckley, job, surprisingly, very well done.

But the gods’ joke was not over. Just today Scott Kurtz, (from my favorite satirist list) did a comic that looks almost like a poorly done replica substituting his own characters and adding a quip on Linux users (the nerdiest of nerds).

I found this comic unsettling and frightening leaving my primal comic urges confused and disoriented. An artist on my “I’ll give him a chance” list pulls off a terrific strip while an artist on my “favorites” list does a cheap looking replica? HAS THE WORLD GONE MAD?!

Now, in Scott’s defense, I realize that part of the oddness of his strip was the fact that we saw his characters Brent and Cole from strait on. I don’t recall ever seeing this before and it just looked a little weird to me. Also I’m sure that Mr. Buckley was not the only one who found inspiration in those horridly blasphemous commercials.

That being said… Mr. Kurts,

It looks like you tried to steal the joke and failed. I’m sure that’s not the case, but please I must hear it from you personally. Say it ain’t so Mr. Kurts, *sniff*, say it ain’t so!

Dear Readers,

Yeah, this was a dumb post. I apologize for putting it up here.

I wrote it only having read the two strips and did not take the time out to research the multitudde of other web comicers who also made a strip on those commercials.

I also didn’t take the time to stop and think, “Those commercial’s are on all the time, it would only make sense that more than one person would make a strip based on it.”

Next time I’ll put more research and common sense into my opinion columns and hopefully spare y’all (and myself) some avoidable grief.

  1. I know you \’PC\’ users are all protective of your rip off software and it seeps through every letter of your article. Why are you so one-sided? While Bill Gates spoon feeds you \’PC\’ users the least you could do is be alittle more open to other possibilities. I was a Windows user for years and just recently swtiched to Mac. Best choice ever. No worries. That\’s the best way that I can describe it for you. No friggin\’ worries. Coming from a non-gamer and someone who cares about graphics, music, and film editing…Mac beats them all. Hands down.

    Here are my versions:
    \”Hello. I\’m a Mac.\” (Part One)
    \”Hello. I\’m a Mac.\” (Part Two)

  2. Wow you completely missed the point of this post. It had nothing to do with which comp was better but everything to do with webcomics copying each other. Calm down and breath chad. I\’m sure you\’ve heard a lot of crap thats pissed you off about the computer of your choice but it wasn\’t coming from this post.

It had nothing to do with which computer was better? Did you even read the same article I read, Meg?

What I was commenting on was Pookey\’s obvious bias.

  4. I don\’t believe anyone was copying anyone else. There are a lot of takes on this topic and they all came out at around the same time, mine own included, only because the commercials came out recently.

Everyone is just drawing inspiration from the world around them. If anything you can blame the coincidence on so many webcomic cartoonists liking the same TV shows. I doubt there\’s anything going on beyond that.

  5. I…honestly don\’t see what the author of the article is talking about. Zampzon pretty much expressed what I think about the issue.

On another note, this is the first PvP strip that I\’ve ever printed out and hung up at work and it\’s all because of that little bomb at the end. When I read the last panel I almost laughed myself silly. Not because I\’m a Linux hater but because it was just so Brent.

    Kudos Kurtz, keep it up.
